Ian Gallagher
London based Freelance iPhone, iPad (iOS, Cocoa, Objective C) & Android (Java) developer
Physics PhD graduate (C++/Data Analysis) and web developer (JS/Python/PHP/MySQL).
I am primarily focused on app development at the moment but I am always open to interesting projects.
I can take your app from the intial design stage right through to launch and have a network of designers and developers to call on when needed.
If you have an app development project that you'd like to discuss or need some extra help, don't hesitate to get in touch.
Recent Projects:
Every Dollar is a Soldier - Live Digital Performance >>
Working with Chinese Arts Now I helped conceptualise and create a 3D world where audience members could log in as avatars and interact with each other while experiencing a piece of online theatre. This was built in Unity for WebGL, networked using a dedicated server in EC2 and delivered using CloudFront and S3. A lot of work was needed to adaptively stream and add effects to the videos while optimising performance. I was part of the creative team arranging audio and visuals and adapting the visual style while developing the various interactions and lighting design.
The digital performance was very well received by professionals in the performing arts industry and garnered a number of excellent reviews.
Formula One TV iPhone/iPad app >>
Working for Ost Modern I rearchitected the app's video player to take in multiple live video streams and allow smooth switching between race cameras. I enabled live streaming race data to be displayed with the video feeds and met with third party CRM providers to integrate their API into the app.
Olympic Channel iPhone/iPad app >>
Working for Ost Modern, I led the iOS development in Swift of a video streaming app for the Olympic Channel that was launched on the closing ceremony of Rio 2016. I worked closely with the design, backend and QA teams to develop and implement the UI/UX specifications, and assisted the web and android teams and mentored junior developers on the project.
NB: The version of the app currently in the App Store is by a different agency and was created after I left the project
Expentory iPhone/Android app >>
Working for Tactu, I developed a new expense itemising app in Swift that was a rebranding of an old app with a pre-existing database of users. The old app had a PHP backend that I fixed and modernised and set up on AWS with multiple Elastic Beanstalk environments. I worked with the Android developer on the project and updated the API for the Android app when needed.
Myriada iPad/iPhone/Web app >>
Co-founding and working for Myriada, I planned, designed and developed a patent-pending system for maximising the accuracy of collective forecasts. I architected the full stack of this very complex project, working with node.js and python on the backend and creating a native client app for iPhone and iPad.
After being accepted by Microsoft into its prestigious accelerator program - Microsoft Ventures, where we received a great deal of valuable mentorship and advice - I developed a web client for the system using Backbone.js and React. This was featured on the front page of the Financial Times and was used by their community of finance professionals at Markets Live.
Art Sense iPad app >>
Working for OH Digital, I planned, designed and developed an iPad app for the Whitworth Art Gallery. The purpose of this app was to let people with dementia - or who were otherwise unable to come to the gallery - to play with different pieces of art from the gallery. Among other things, it used physics modelling and OpenGL.
Christie's iPad app >>
Working for Running in the Halls, I developed a new version of the Christie's iPad app from the ground up for Christie's auction house. I also consulted for and developed a series of major updates to the app.
NB: I worked on this project from Jan 2011 - Apr 2013. After that a completely new version was built by a different agency.
POPA Camera iPhone app >>
Working for Running in the Halls, I developed version 1.2 of the POPA camera app, built to be used with the POPA Button. This included rewriting the camera code to include tap-to-focus and numerous bug fixes and performance improvements.
The Daily Mash Android app >>
Following the success of the iPhone app, The Daily Mash asked me to develop an app for Android. This has been very well recieved and is in the Top 3 News & Magazine apps in Android Market.
Creative Tourist iPhone app >>
